FTTH Conference 2025: resounding success

Europe's premier fiber optic event took place from March 25 to 27 at the RAI Amsterdam and attracted around 3.000 participants from all across Europe, including a significant number of C-level executives, investors, technical experts, and regulatory professionals.
“Welcoming the continent’s leading fibre professionals to our FTTH Conference is always a great opportunity, not only to establish new contacts, but to look at the bigger picture of how we can work together toward our shared goals”, said FTTH Council Europe Director General, Vincent Garnier. “This year’s Conference proved as successful as ever, and the FTTH Council Europe can’t wait to welcome everyone to London for next year’s Conference.”
The event opened with the workshop-focused day covering key topics such as copper switch-off, sustainability, market intelligence, technology and investment. These trends were carried into the rest of the week, reinforced by expert panel discussions and immersive keynote presentations.
The FTTH Innovation Awards recognised cutting-edge fibre advancements across AI, infrastructure, workflow, and installation. Recipients included Adtran, Corning, Deepomatic, IQGeo, and Nokia for their unique groundbreaking contributions in six different categories. Marta Wojchiechowska, CEO of Fiberhost, received the FTTH Individual Award for her commitment to advancing FTTH implementation. SIRO and Yungo were respectively awarded the Operator Award and Champion of Diversity Award. Retiring Telefónica Global CTO Enrique Blanco was recognised for his visionary leadership and outstanding contribution to the fibre industry.
“Each nominee showcased exceptional innovatio nand commitment, driving advancements in fibre deployment and adoption across Europe,” said FTTH Council Europe President Roshene McCool.
Several documents were published just ahead of the conference:
- The ‘European FTTH/B Market Panorama 2025’ which details the notable progress made across Europe last year, with the number of homes passed with FTTH/FTTB across EU39 increasing by 25 million between September 2023 to September 2024.
- The March 2025 update of the ‘Overview of fibre financing transactions in selected European Countries’ report.
- A ‘Open Access’ white paper from the FTTH Council Europe’s Open Access Working Group which set out five guiding principles of a truly open access wholesale environment.
- The third edition of the In-home Broadband Excellence (IBE) Guide, recognising advances in home networking technologies such as Wi-Fi 7, Fibre to the Room (FTTR), Wi-Fi Mesh and containerisation.
- Two whitepapers from the Deployment and Operations committee. “The role of IT in accelerating FTTH Deployments and Operations” covers topics including IT solutions for key challenges faced by operators in deploying and operating fibre networks and addresses FTTx network pain points at the Plan, Design, Build, and Operate stages. “A case for end-to-end fixed access solution disaggregation”, presents a case for disaggregating end-to-end fixed access solutions: a strategic shift from traditional vertically integrated, silo-based approaches to more open, standards-driven optical access networks.

A new case study examines the economic impact of fiber broadband in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the surrounding area, focusing on three key economic indicators: private sector job growth, housing value, and digital microbusiness density, with comparisons made between Charlottesville and similarly sized cities in Virginia. A few highlights:
- Availability of high-speed, low-latency broadband accounted for roughly 35% of Charlottesville’s private sector job growth during 2015-2019
- $4 million per year in increased housing value in the Charlottesville area
- Charlottesville ranks highly in Digital Microbusiness Density – a key indicator of small business health – compared to Virginia cities of similar population size

Fiber Connect Council MENA Conference 2025 Showcases Region's AI Infrastructure Advancement

The recent 14th annual Fiber Connect Council MENA Conference and Exhibition in Dubai highlighted the MENA region's rapid advancement in AI-enabled fiber infrastructure. The event drew over 270industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts, and showcased the latest innovations in fiber optics and AI integration.
The technical program featured several high-impact sessions, including "Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and 5GPanorama," which explored the key drivers, challenges, and opportunities in accelerating digital transformation through advanced connectivity solutions. As the need for high-speed, low-latency connectivity continues to grow, carriers are tasked with developing and maintaining resilient fibre-optic networks to support AI’s intensive data processing, storage, and transmission requirements.

FBA OpTIC Path™ program: WIA partnership and expansion

The Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA) is partnering with the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) to expand WIA’s Telecommunications Education Center curriculum with FBA’s Optical Telecom Installer Certification program (OpTIC Path™). “Adding FBA’s OpTIC Path program within TEC is one more way that WIA and FBA are working together to support employers with the critical training courses they need to prepare for the future, while enabling individuals to turn a job into a career within the broadband industry,” said Patrick Halley, President and CEO, WIA.
Furthermore, the FBA has welcomed a stream of new schools to the list of institutions offering the OpTIC Path™ program. FBA estimates that 180,000 new workers will be needed over the next decade to meet the construction, maintenance, and expansion demands associated with the $42.45 billion Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program. The OpTIC Path program provides crucial skills to jumpstart a career in fibre while helping fill the broadband technician workforce gap. Fiber Connect Council MENA to Chair the FCGA in 2025

The FTTH Councils Global Alliance (FCGA) recently announced at its annual summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that Fiber Connect Council MENA, represented by its President, Dr. Ala Mousa, has been appointed as the Chair of the FTTH Councils Global Alliance. Dr. Mousa will lead the FCGA in its global efforts to promote the adoption of fibre broadband technologies and to strengthen collaborations within the fibre connectivity industry.

At the most recent Fiber Connect, we hosted the fourth annual Women in Fiber (WIF) Luncheon. The the WIF Committee was created in 2022 to provide FBA members with resources to identify, develop, and promote women in the fiber broadband industry and highlight the link between female leadership and improved business performance.
